THE ALASKA FLAG TURNS 80

Live music by New Monsoon set people to dancing. Celebrity Ice Cream Scoopers battled over whose turn it was to scoop. Many thanks to Al Fleetwood for organizing the scoopers and keeping the fights to a minimum! A new feature at this year's event was Glacier Pizza who also provided cotton candy. A definite hit!

The hotdogs from Alaska Sausage & Seafood were the perfect balance between spicy and mild and cold drinks from Coca-Cola of Alaska made a great match.

Another Flag Day first was a proposal of marriage! Following Ernie Hall's reading of the Benny Benson story, Nathan Johnson got down on bended knee before Jalanie Johnson and 1200 guests and asked if she would have him.

The answer was yes. A note for those of you who might see pictures of Nathan on Flag Day and question why his arm is in a sling - the injury occurred prior to the proposal and Jalanie had nothing to do with it!

Besides all the fun, the Alaska Flag Day Celebration raised over $10,000 to benefit the Mike McDonald Partnership in Treatment Fund. Channel 2 and Jackie Purcell helped raise public awareness of the issues Alaska's kids are challenged with by featuring the event on the evening weather.

Thanks to everyone who participated in the event! Mark your calendar now for 2008 - the Alaska Flag Day Celebration happens every July 9th!
